About the PIS/PASEP number
What is PIS/PASEP?
PIS (Programa de Integração Social) is the registration number of private-sector workers in Brazil and is managed by Caixa. PASEP (Programa de Formação do Patrimônio do Servidor Público) is its equivalent for public servants, managed by Banco do Brasil. Both use the same number format, which is common in payroll and HR systems.
Are PIS, PASEP, NIS and NIT the same number?
They have the same format. NIS (Número de Identificação Social) is used by social programs and NIT (Número de Identificação do Trabalhador) by INSS, Brazil's social security institute. All of them have 11 digits and the same check digit rule, so a number generated here works for testing any of these fields.
How is the check digit calculated?
Each of the first 10 digits is multiplied by its weight, in the order 3, 2, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2. The results are added up and divided by 11: the check digit is 11 minus the remainder. If that gives 10 or 11, the check digit is 0. With punctuation, the number is written as 000.00000.00-0.
