About the certificate matrícula

What is the certificate matrícula?

It is the 32-digit number printed at the top of Brazilian birth, marriage and death certificates issued since January 1, 2010. It identifies the entry in the registry office's book and was defined by CNJ Provimento 3/2009.

How the 32 digits are split

6 digits for the registry office (the national service code), 2 for the archive, 2 for the service (always 55), 4 for the year of the entry, 1 for the book type, 5 for the book, 3 for the page, 7 for the term and 2 check digits. The book type is 1 for birth, 2 for marriage and 4 for death.

How the check digits are calculated

The first 30 digits are multiplied by the weights 2, 3, 4 and so on up to 10, then 0, 1, 2 and up to 10 again, and the sum is divided by 11. The remainder is the first digit (a remainder of 10 becomes 1). The second digit comes from the same calculation over 31 digits, starting at weight 1.
