What the validator checks
A Brazilian voter registration number (título de eleitor) has 12 digits, and the last two are calculated from the other ten. This page redoes that calculation with what you typed and compares it with the check digits you entered.
When the number passes, it also reads the state code in digits 9 and 10. The Voter Registration Number Generator uses the same rule, so everything it creates passes here.
How the number is built
The 12 digits split into three parts:
- Digits 1 to 8: the registration's sequential number.
- Digits 9 and 10: the code of the state where the registration was made, from 01 (São Paulo) to 28 (Abroad).
- Digits 11 and 12: the two check digits.
Electoral zone and section are not part of this number, so the tool does not check them. On the printed card the number appears in groups of four digits, and the field uses the same format.
How the check digits are calculated
The calculation runs Modulo 11 twice:
- Multiply the first 8 digits by 2, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 and 3, from left to right. For São Paulo and Minas Gerais the weights are 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2.
- Add up the results and divide the sum by 11. If the remainder is 0 or 1, the first digit is 0. Otherwise it is 11 minus the remainder.
- For the second digit, join the state code and the first digit and multiply those three numbers by 7, 8 and 9. For São Paulo and Minas Gerais the weights are 4, 3 and 2.
- Add up, divide by 11 and apply the same remainder rule to get the second digit.
Example in São Paulo: for 1234 5678 01 the first sum is 156, the remainder is 2 and the first digit is 9. In the second calculation, 0×4 + 1×3 + 9×2 is 21, the remainder is 10 and the second digit is 1. The number becomes 1234 5678 0191.
What it is for
- Testing a form's voter registration field with numbers that should pass and numbers that should fail.
- Checking that a number generated for testing has the right check digits.
- Spotting typos, such as a swapped digit, in a list of registration numbers.
